Scale and Refuge: Twilight of the Anthropocene
The concept of twilight is already at work in the anthropocene, where a certain capacity for the species to view its own end is enabled by destroying the notion that humans are the transcendental condition for all thinking life: thinking the human species within time requires a turn away from the notion of humans as the sole condition of experience. But the concept of twilight has another sense, where a certain dimming of light – far from obscuring vision – enables the emergence of forms and figures. As the species begins to assimilate that it is in a stage of twilight, of thinking its own end within time, we might begin to ask what forms of viewing, visibility and illumination have enabled species-reflection…
