Le programme académique du congrès a prévu de mettre en évidence des recherches et des conceptions architecturales sous forme de présentation et de discussions de projets et réalisations sur le thème du congrès : « L’âme d’une ville ».

Les organisateurs du congrès Séoul 2017 invitent tous les architectes à soumettre une contribution sur l’un des axes de réflexion : Culture, Futur, Nature. Les propositions sur des thèmes libres, différents des trois sous-thèmes précédents sont les bienvenues à condition qu’elles soient en relations avec le thème principal du congrès.

Diplômé de La Cambre en 2009, ​Bernard Dubois se forme auprès de différents studios d’architecture jusqu’à ce qu’il fonde sa propre agence en 2013.​

En 2014, il est co-curateur du pavillon belge de la 14ème Biennale de Venise.​ Son travail est à la rencontre du Modernisme, du Postmodernisme et du Pop Design. Il décrit son travail comme « un mélange de différentes inspirations, où l’architecture d’aujourd’hui – comme celle de Le Corbusier ou Niemeyer – doit être polyvalente et capable de s’adapter à différents projets, d’un building à une simple pièce de mobilier, il s’agit d’interpréter la vie sous toutes ses formes. »

La conférence s’inscrit dans le cadre de la masterclass « In/Out Designing Urban Inclusion », organisée par le Metrolab.brussels auquel est associé le centre de recherche Louise de la Faculté. La conférence se veut un retour sur expérience avec la présentation par les architectes en charge de quatre projets d’équipements publics récemment réalisés à Bruxelles. Ces quatre équipements ont été réalisés dans le cadre des fonds européens FEDER.

The conference on ‘Impact by Designing’ strives to explore those developments in research that have evolved around creative practices – specifically focusing on architecture, design, arts and music. It will also be the fourth conference in the cycle that started with ‘The Unthinkable Doctorate’ in 2005 and was successfully followed by the ‘Communicating (by) Design’ in 2009 and ‘Knowing (by) Designing’ in 2013, all of them hosted at the Sint-Lucas School of Architecture in Brussels. The 2017 conference aims to take a further step in developing research in those disciplines where creative practice plays an important role, and hence to make a substantial impact within the field.

Daar waar Thomas More aan de hand van het fictieve eiland Utopia de samenleving een spiegel voorhield, vertrekt deze reeks vanuit de gebouwde realiteit om het utopisch denken over de stad en architectuur een blik in eigen boezem te geven.

Deane Simpson is an architect, urbanist and associate professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture. He is the author of Young-Old. Urban Utopias of an Ageing Society and co-editor of The City between Freedom and Security and the forthcoming Atlas of the Copenhagens.

Titled ‘Socio-demographic Plastics’, his talk unfolds some of the implications for architecture and urbanism of one of the dominant societal transformations taking place – demographic ageing. It identifies the group known as the ‘Young-Old’ as a petri dish for experiments in altered forms of subjectivity, collectivity, and environment – one that produces a field of latent urban and architectural novelty, with both escapist and emancipatory dimensions.

In recent international literature addressing the history of 20th century architectural theory, the year 1968 is indicated as a decisive moment, giving rise to a ‘new’ architectural theory. From that moment onwards, emphasis was no longer placed on the aesthetics of architecture, but on its critical potential. Yet, according to some scholars, this intensification of theory was short-lived. A presence of coexisting and even contradictory paradigms derived from very different epistemic domains (anthropology, philosophy, linguistics, social sciences, etc.) led to a setback of theory, resulting in an end-of-theory atmosphere in the 1990s.
