The exhibition “Towers and skyscrapers. From Babel to Dubai” evokes the human urge to rise to challenges and overcome physical constraints. These architectural forms reflect humankind’s fascination with verticality and serve as a reminder of the pursuit of creativity, of ingenuity marked by boldness, excellence and a perfect mastery of material and construction alike. The myth of the Tower of Babel, for centuries engraved in our memories, serves as a counterpoint to remind us of the vulnerability of initiative and the risk of excess.
So many buildings have symbolized the challenge of height! From the cathedrals of Christian Europe, to the minarets of Orient, to the watchtowers of Northern Europe—whatever the religious or secular context—the aim has always been to compete with a model, surpass it and scale greater heights…
